The ins and outs of lip augmentation

One of the most, if not the single most, popular areas to treat on the face is the lips. It’s an area that everyone, regardless of age or gender, seems to want to augment in some way.

Given that this is such an in-demand treatment, it’s natural that there are a lot of injectors offering this service. Some good and some not so good, but I’m here today to talk to you about how to advocate for yourself to make sure you get the most beautiful and natural looking pout possible!

Before going to your first appointment it’s important to do some research of your own, look at different injectors that you might want to go see and make some consultation appointments. Ask the injector as many questions as you want, don’t be afraid to ‘ask too many questions’ because a good injector or doctor will want to answer them!

When it comes to lip filler, less really is more. I often will use a half syringe on my first time lip patients because this amount of filler often gives a really beautiful pout that doesn’t look overdone. Remember, you can always add more later! But if you go too far and don’t like the results, it’s much more difficult to remove filler than it is to start slow and add more.

Another really important aspect of augmenting lips is making sure to maintain facial balance. Everyone is unique, and you want to make sure that your injector focuses on filling your lips in a way that looks good but still looks like YOU. You also want to make sure that when lips are being filled you are also addressing other areas of the lower third of the face that might look a bit out of place with a beautiful new pout, such as marionette lines, lip lines, and the filtrim (the area between the upper lip and nose). If the lips are full and youthful looking, but there are some deeper lines around the lips that will lead to something looking ‘off’. So it’s best to treat the entire area, not just the lips. And this can be done with a number of different treatments, like botox or lasers, and doesn’t need to be adding more filler.

Choosing a filler product is usually up to the injector and their expertise in what you will do best with and what they are most experienced in using. But if you’ve done research and have a preference for a certain filler product you should definitely ask your injector about it! If they don’t like using that filler, ask them why. Again, don’t be afraid to ask questions! But it’s good to go in with knowledge as well as an open mind and realistic expectations.

Start small, be conservative, and maintain the goal of still looking like yourself when all is said and done. This is the perfect recipe for a happy end result!
